Until the early 1990s Ian, by his own admission, had not been connected with a deeper sense of self, an inner freedom that would allow him to realise himself fully both as an actor and as a human being. To say his coming out was spontaneous or a shock to himself was far from the truth; it had been carefully under preparation in many ways, most of them below the level of consciousness until the break-up with Sean Mathias. There was the rapid and sudden increase in awareness of HIV because of the ‘gay plague’, which scared him until he could check he was not infected, the death of his close friend Ian Charleson, and the year-long tour of America, when he met up with prophets of the gay movement who put the final seal of approval on his ‘conversion’ and public declaration. These experiences were important triggers of change. But most important of all was his need to move forward.
